A concise, practical guide to set up your Trezor Suite® and secure your cryptocurrency safely. Step-by-step, plain language, and best practices for new users.
What is Trezor Suite®?
Trezor Suite® is the official desktop and web companion app for Trezor hardware wallets. It provides a secure interface to manage your cryptocurrencies, install/update firmware, create or restore wallets from recovery seeds, and interact with supported blockchains and tokens — all while keeping your private keys safely stored on the hardware device.
Before you begin — what you'll need
A compatible Trezor hardware device (Trezor Model T or Trezor One).
A computer (Windows, macOS, or Linux) with a USB port, or a supported mobile device if you prefer mobile access.
The official Trezor Suite® application (download from the official Trezor website—always verify the domain and checksum).
A private, quiet place to record your recovery seed and follow security precautions.
Security tip: Never share your recovery seed or private keys with anyone. Trezor staff or support will never ask for your full recovery seed.
1. Install Trezor Suite®
Go to the Official Site® and download the latest Trezor Suite® installer for your operating system.
Open the downloaded file and follow the installation instructions. On first run, Trezor Suite® will guide you through the initial connection process.
When prompted, connect your Trezor device to your computer with the supplied USB cable.
Verify downloads: Always confirm you downloaded Trezor Suite® from the official website and, when available, check the provided checksum or signature to prevent tampered installers.
2. Initialize your Trezor device
During the first setup you’ll be offered two options: Create a new wallet or Restore wallet from recovery seed. Choose Create a new wallet if your device is new.
Follow on-screen prompts on Trezor Suite® and confirm actions on the device's screen.
Set a device label and (optional) passphrase if you understand advanced features (passphrase acts as an additional secret).
The device will generate a recovery seed — a list of 12, 18, or 24 words depending on your settings.
Write down the recovery seed exactly as displayed, on the provided recovery card or another physical medium. Keep it offline and secure.
Do not store your recovery seed digitally (screenshots, cloud notes, photos). Anyone with access to this seed can control your funds.
3. Update firmware (if prompted)
Firmware updates deliver security improvements and new features. Trezor Suite® will notify you if a firmware update is required.
Back up your recovery seed before updating (it’s best practice even though the process is designed to preserve your seed).
Follow the Suite's instructions. Approve the update on your device when it requests confirmation.
Wait for the update to complete — do not unplug the device during the process.
4. Add and manage accounts
In Trezor Suite®, go to Accounts and choose which cryptocurrency you want to add (Bitcoin, Ethereum, and many others are supported).
Create a receiving address for deposits by clicking Receive — confirm the address on the Trezor device to ensure it matches the Suite display.
To send funds, click Send, enter the destination address and amount, then confirm the transaction details on your device before signing.
Always verify addresses on the device screen: Malware can change addresses shown on your computer; verifying on the Trezor screen prevents this attack.
5. Using the optional passphrase
The passphrase is an advanced optional feature that adds a second secret to your recovery seed. When enabled, different passphrases produce different wallets from the same seed.
Pros: Stronger security and plausible deniability (multiple wallets from single seed).
Cons: If you forget the passphrase, the funds in that passphrase-protected wallet are irrecoverable.
Only enable a passphrase if you understand how it works and how to store it securely.
6. Backups, recovery and testing
Store your recovery seed in at least two geographically separate, secure locations (e.g., a safe and a safety deposit box).
Consider using metal seed storage for long-term durability against fire, water, and time.
Test recovery on a spare device: if possible, verify you can restore the seed to a second Trezor device before relying solely on the original.
7. Troubleshooting & common questions
My device isn't recognized:
Try a different USB cable or port.
Reboot your computer and reopen Trezor Suite®.
Ensure you installed any OS-level drivers required for your system.
I lost my Trezor device:
Obtain a new Trezor device from an official reseller.
Use your recovery seed to restore the wallet on the new device.
How do I get support?
Contact official Trezor support via the Official Site® support channels. When requesting help, never reveal your full recovery seed — support will never ask for it.
Best practices — quick checklist
Keep recovery seed offline and private; never photograph it or store it in the cloud.
Confirm transaction details on the device screen before approving.
Keep firmware and Trezor Suite® up to date from official sources.
Use a passphrase only if you understand the risks and consequences.
Use metal backup for long-term protection of the seed words.
